Rocky “Soul Man” Johnson, an African-American trailblazer within the wrestling trade and father to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, died on January 15. The WWE Hall of Famer, whose actual title was Wayde Bowles, was 75.

Known as “The Soul Man,” Johnson started his profession within the 1960s with the National Wrestling Alliance earlier than signing with Vince McMahon’s World Wide Wrestling Federation in 1983. His demise was introduced on the WWE’s web site.

He and fellow WWE Hall of Famer Tony Atlas would go on to turn into the primary Black world tag crew champions within the WWE later that yr by defeating the Wild Samoans. The Rock inducted his father into the Hall of Fame in 2008.

He retired from in-ring motion in 1991 and for a few years helped practice his son, who would go on to turn into probably the most profitable WWE stars of all time. It was Johnson who launched The Rock to the load room, a spot the place the Hollywood juggernaut now spends a major period of time.

“Other dads took their kids to the playground,” Johnson as soon as instructed Muscle & Fitness. “Mine took me to the gym, and the gyms he took me to were very hardcore. Weight rooms? Really? But it was important bonding time for us, and it was there that I learned at a very young age that there’s no substitute for hard work.”

The Rock at all times saved his father near him. His unique ring title was Rocky Maivia—a mixture of his father’s title and his maternal grandfather’s title, High Chief Peter Maivia.

As of this writing, The Rock has not but commented on his father’s demise. But he’s posted about him usually on his Instagram web page. On Father’s Day 2018, he posted a throwback image of himself and “The original Rock” and spoke of the powerful love his previous man used to dish out.

“Years later as a man and father of three girls, I know that tough love, is a helluva lot better than no love at all,” he wrote. “I’ll take it. It’s made me who I am today.”

Happy Father’s Day to this infrequently smiling OG unhealthy ass. Little boys by nature, look as much as and idolize their previous man. They need to be similar to em, do no matter they do and are at all times searching for their approval. Funny factor is the day I ended searching for that approval was the day I understood what it meant to be man and extra importantly, a father. That shift lifted me to a brand new degree of gratitude for the powerful love he at all times gave. Years later as a person and father of three ladies, I do know that powerful love, is a helluva lot higher than no love at all. I’ll take it. It’s made me who I’m right this moment. Grateful to the unique Rock. #HappyFathersDay #KingStache #RockyJohnson
